Thank you for your question! You asked for an opinion of cost on a job. Here was your question: "I would like to have a wall knocked out in a deep hall closet next to the bathroom and have shelving installed. I may use all or just a portion of the closet space."
The knocking out shouldn't take too long. In a normal situation without too many complications, like wiring in the wall or limited access, the wall can probably be removed completely within about 2 -3 hours. If the wall is a bearing member you'll need to add additional support into the final plan. As far as finishing off the space it is impossible to guess what will be required without seeing the plan.
A quick note, in California an unlicensed handyman is limited to $500 total invoice on a job like this. Over that amount and he/she would be in violation of the law. Also, if you choose to have an insured handyman do the work I've found that their insurance will not cover jobs that exceed the $500 limit. You will be left without protection.
Hope this is of some help,
Thanks for asking,
