askthehandyman.net - home repairs cost question

Hello Aruna,

Thank you for your question! You asked for an opinion on the cost of a job.

Here was your question: "Bedroom closets: drop ceiling in master bedroom. install one shelf. Install closet ironing board. replace sliding doors in 3 bedrooms. Garage: Fix garage door opener. remove cab/move dryer next to washer. Install sink. paint garage floor."

These jobs appear to be perfect tasks for a handyman but there is one thing you should be aware of. If you hire an unlicensed handyman to do the work the combined total for the jobs will certainly be over $500. In California the Minor Work Exemption limits the total job size to $500. If the combined total of labor and materials exceeds that limit the handyman is required to have a Contractors License. Even if the handyman carries liability insurance his/her policy will not pay claims on a job that exceeded $500 since the work was not performed legally. Youll have no legal protection if something goes wrong.

Hope this is of some help,

Thanks for asking,
